WHY DIRECT WITH THE COCO

Interested in directing a CoCo tournament? Awesome! Directing with the CoCo connects you with passionate players and organizational support. Thanks to a suite of tools and resources we have developed especially for first-time directors, directing a Scrabble tournament has never been easier. Here is what we do for every CoCo director to make directing simple:

  • We create a dedicated webpage for your tournament, hosted on the CoCo website and promoted through our social media channels.

  • We offer a custom web-based program that collects results digitally from players through the CoCo Live Coverage page. This innovation eliminates data entry for directors (woohoo!) and enables you to calculate and post standings and pairings in lightning time. Running a tournament and posting pairings is now as fast and easy as pushing a button.

  • We manage your entrants list so that you don’t have to. We add players, denote tentative players, and update the list rapidly whenever a new player registers. For those who prefer to edit their own list, we give you the ability to do that, too.

  • We take care of money management for you, enabling players to easily register for your tournament through the CoCo Play Store. Gone are the days when you had to manually track who paid what and received their refund through various payment platforms.

  • We give you the option of paying prizes directly to players or having the CoCo handle prize distribution immediately after your final game ends.

  • We offer logistical assistance with everything from what pairing formulas to use, how to drum up interest and recruit players, and more.

  • We provide you with reusable blank slips and dry erase markers to run a truly paperless tournament.

  • We offer a plethora of tournament materials to help you get started and run a smooth event.

  • We rate your tournament within minutes after it ends and post your players’ shiny new ratings instantly.

  • We protect you from financial risk by covering you under the CoCo’s insurance policy.

BASIC ELIGIBILITY

  • You are based in North America and intend to direct tournaments in North America.

  • You agree to follow the CoCo Directors’ Handbook, the rules on conduct in Part 6 of WESPA Rules version 4.0, and the CoCo Anti-Harassment Policy.

  • You exercise sound financial stewardship of your tournament budget. You pay prizes as promised and limit expenses to the reasonable costs directly associated with running the tournament.

  • You agree to use the current WESPA rules and the official WESPA-approved lexicon, CSW2021.

  • You have previously directed a tournament or completed orientation training with a CoCo-certified director.

  • You are a positive ambassador for the game and for the CoCo as an organization.

DIRECTOR’S CERTIFICATION FORM

Once you have confirmed that you meet the eligibility criteria, submit the Director’s Certification Form. We’ll review your responses and follow up with you.

To remain certified, you’ll need to continue to comply with the eligibility criteria. The CoCo reserves the rights to deny certification or decertify a director who violates the eligibility criteria, is the subject of disciplinary action, or otherwise reflects poorly on the mission and values of the CoCo.
