Previewing a busy two weekends of Scrabble in late September
Ah, yes - the start of a new Scrabble season. There's no feeling quite like it.
Word Cup just wrapped up a little over a month ago, and we've had a little bit of a lull in tournament activity since then. It's understandable - after all the hustle and bustle of the summer championship season, I think everyone in our little CoCo community, players and directors alike, was ready to take a break for a minute. It's healthy to take a little time, refresh, recharge your batteries, and take a little breather before whatever's next.
But whatever's next starts this weekend.
It's time to get back to Scrabble action.
We're excited to kick off a new season of Scrabble across North America, and we're doing it with a bang, as a few different tournaments are taking place these next couple of weeks. Let's preview the Scrabble action that lies ahead...
Vancouver, BC
This coming weekend, Sept. 19 and 20, we've got a 2-day tournament coming up north of the border in Vancouver. There's a bustling Scrabble scene in the Vancouver metro area, with a handful of Collins enthusiasts among them, so the city is a great setting for some CoCo action. This weekend brings a 14-game tournament, to be held just outside the city at Richmond Nature Park in Richmond, BC.
We already saw one successful CoCo multi-day go off at the start of this summer, in mid-May, so this weekend's "End of Summer Tournament" makes the perfect bookend to the season. Thanks to director Chris Williams, organizer Miriam Gregory, and the rest of the BC Scrabble crew for making these events happen.
Providence, RI
After a brief layoff, CoCo 1-day tournaments in New England are back again. The dream team of director Matthew O'Connor and organizer Niel Gan already ran four such events earlier this year - and now, summer vacation is over and it's time to get back to business. Matthew and Niel are hosting a 6-game tournament on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Between the Providence and Boston-area events that these two guys have run over the last two years, they've really been able to put New England on the CoCo map in a serious way. It'll be great to see them back in action again this fall.
Portland, OR
Twenty games in 32 hours!
If you're a total sicko who can never get enough Scrabble to sate your addiction, then we've got just the tournament for you. The "PDX 20/32 Tournament," brought to you by director Dave Wiegand and organizer Travis Chaney, is one jam-packed weekend of Scrabble games.
This one is coming up not this weekend, but the next one - Sept. 26 and 27 - at a local bakery and brewpub in Northeast Portland. And it's going to be pretty epic.
Three different tournaments, three different cities, all across North America, but they have one major thing in common, and that's awesome teams of people running them. Shout out to Chris and Miriam, to Matthew and Niel, and to Dave and Travis. These have been three of the most prolific local Scrabble communities in all the land when it comes to running CoCo events consistently, and these great directing teams are a huge reason why. It's a big thrill to see all three of them back in action within a two-weekend span this month.
So let's do this! Let's get the fall Scrabble season underway. From sea to shining sea, it's time to bust out the boards and tiles and do this thing. Game on.
