Hello from your friendly neighborhood Executive Director! As the elected head of the CoCo, it's my job to advance strategic initiatives, make sure our bills get paid, and develop resources for players and directors.

What do you get when you combine 18 rowdy Scrabblers, a quaint Southern college town, and a charming little neighborhood Cajun restaurant? A heck of a weekend, that's what.

Previewing our weekend tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia
This weekend, Jennifer and I will head to Charlottesville, Virginia, to host a 2-day Scrabble tournament. It will be the third live CoCo tournament to take place in the post-COVID vaccination era, and the fourth event overall. I'm super excited for it - on a couple of different levels.

Twelve players representing eight countries from all over the globe competed in this free 8-game event - competitors from Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Kuwait, and Nigeria were all present, in addition to the United States and Canada.

As we look to further expand the CoCo community, we're ready to take action by committing funds to attract new players. Today, we are very pleased to announce a new program - CoCo Newcomer Discounts.

Recapping the Portland-Alberta Beer Scrabble Thing (PABST)
Nine other Scrabblers tried vainly to dethrone the tiler known only as drbing, but in the end, even his nemesis David "CoolWhip®" Whitley could not defeat him more than once. drbing took home $420 for his 10-2 +1560 efforts.

Nestled amongst breweries and majestic trees, the PABST will take place in a stylish century-old bungalow. Short for the Portland-Alberta Beer Scrabble Thing, the PABST offers a weekend of games in one of the USA's hippest neighborhoods, the Alberta Arts District.

Recapping a summer of CoCo virtual club play
The CoCo virtual club on Woogles scaled back its schedule for the summer quarter, but the fun and intense competition wasn't scaled back at all! The five-game weekly schedule helped keep the standings close, and sure enough, the summer quarter club championship wasn't decided until the very final week.

On supporting women in Scrabble
Take a look at the typical Scrabble tournament, and you'll notice a pattern: Fewer than half the entrants are women, and even fewer finish at the top. As we at the CoCo strive to attract and retain a broad diversity of players, we're exploring how to support players who identify as women in Scrabble.

Recapping the third annual Labor Day Oregon Coast Open
Over Labor Day weekend, we finally resumed live Scrabble with a 20-game tournament on the Oregon Coast, and we're pleased to say the event went smoothly. We're grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.

Dave Wiegand successfully defended his title and takes home a jellyfish plaque to join the octopus plaque he won in 2019. Conrad Bassett-Bouchard won second place, Kolton Koehler snagged third, and Ruth Hamilton earned the class prize.

Each September, the Labor Day Oregon Coast Open (LOCO) brings players from around North America to a small beachside town. This year, 16 players will convene for the first live CoCo tournament in more than a year.

Pivoting back to in-person Scrabble tournaments
Live tournaments were our goal when we first set out - and now that a substantial number of players are vaccinated against COVID and ready to resume small in-person gatherings, live tournaments are once again our focus. Real, over-the-board Scrabble is back.
