Announcing the 2024 Word Cup Collins division, presented by WGPO and the CoCo

We're back!

Just like we were in 2022, the CoCo team will be back in the saddle for 2024, running the Collins division of Word Cup alongside the team from WGPO. We're excited to be co-directing yet another elite championship event, and we hope to see you all there next summer.

For this year's event, we'll be heading southwest - the next Word Cup will take place at the Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel in Albuquerque, NM. The five-day event will begin on Saturday, July 27, 2024 and run through Wednesday, July 31. And, as with previous Word Cups, we are grateful for the generous support of the Carter Chapman Shreve Family Foundation, which will enable us to pay out hefty cash prizes to the top performers. We're expecting this tournament, as it was in 2022, to be the biggest and most lucrative CSW event on American soil in 2024.

Our whole team is excited to once again be playing a role in this championship event. Our hope is to keep making Word Cup an even better version of what it is already - a big, inclusive championship tournament that unites players from all over North America. When you combine our own enthusiastic base of players with the thriving player community that WGPO has had for years, you get one heck of a field. We're expecting an ultra-competitive Division 1, including many of the best Scrabble players in the world, as well as a booming Division 2 for novice and intermediate players to enjoy.

Here are some details on the 2024 Word Cup:

  • The Word Cup Collins division will be directed by Peter Armstrong, Rob Robinsky, and Evans Clinchy.

  • The format will be the same as always - 31 games, starting with 7 each day from Saturday through Tuesday, then finishing up with the final 3 rounds on Wednesday morning. Games will start at 9:15 each morning.

  • The venue will be the Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel, located at 2910 Yale Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.

  • This tournament will feature two divisions. Players will be placed into divisions based on the average of their CoCo, WESPA, and WGPO CSW peak ratings between July 1, 2023 and July 1, 2024. All players with average peak ratings of 1600 or more will be required to play in Division 1; all players with average peak ratings under 1600 will have the option of playing in Division 2, though they may play up if desired.

  • The entry fee will be $175 - but if you're a CoCo Premium Member, you will receive a $15 discount off that price. Learn more about CoCo membership here.

That's about it! Enough yammering from me - it's time to get this show on the road. Registration for the 2024 Word Cup is officially open today, so don't wait - get yourself signed up now. We can't wait to see you in Albuquerque come July.
