Everything you need to know about the upcoming Word Cup

At this point, it's absolutely unmistakable - summer is here. You don't need a solstice to make it official. There are heat waves breaking out all across North America. You wanna cook an egg on the sidewalk? Scrambled, over easy, sunny side up, you can take your pick, no problem. And that means, unmistakably, that Word Cup time is creeping closer and closer. Our big summer championship is approaching fast, and it's time to lock in.

As of this writing, there are exactly 47 days remaining until the first tiles are drawn and the first bingos are played at Word Cup 2026. And those days are going to fly by before you know what hits you. Tournament time is right around the corner, pretty much.

So today, let's run through some of the key things you need to know about the upcoming Word Cup. This is the tournament of the summer, so let's take a deep dive and explore it from every angle.

The preparations are going well

At this point, everything is going smoothly, and we're getting ready to offer you all a top-flight player experience at our big championship event in Williamsburg this summer. Our venue, the Williamsburg Lodge, a beautiful hotel that's just steps away from Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area, is pulling out all the stops for us, and our directing team is doing everything we can to prepare for a smooth and seamless event.

You can expect a beautiful venue, a well-run tournament, top-notch competition, live coverage, and streaming too! The all-star stream team of Christian and Andrew Kay are preparing for Word Cup as we speak. We're getting ready to broadcast all 31 games of Word Cup for Scrabble fans around the world to enjoy.

The field is coming together

We've still got plenty of time to go, but already, we've got a pretty strong field of CSW competitors taking shape for Word Cup. At this very moment, give or take a shaky tentative here or a possible WOW switch-over there, we've got an entrants list with about 44-ish names on it, and that's not including the late surge in registration that usually comes at the eleventh hour. We're on pace to have a pretty strong field when all's said and done.

This group has no shortage of star power at the top - that first five of Josh Sokol, Wellington Jighere, Will Anderson, Joshua Castellano, Ben Schoenbrun is absolutely nothing to sneeze at - but it's also got depth and breadth. We've got 27 players slated for Division 1 and 17 for D2. We've got players joining us from all over the world. We've got a really diverse field of people from all over Scrabbledom, and we've still got more trickling in every week.

The prize pool will be juicy

We've been offering generous CSW prizes at Word Cup for years now, and this year should be no different. When we announced this year's tournament in January, we promised a top prize of $7,500 if we see 55 or more entrants - and we've got a shot at hitting that number. We're 80 percent there with over a month to go, so I'd put our chances at a coin flip, more or less.

But even if we fall short of that number, we're still looking at a robust prize pool. You do the math - with each entrant checking in at $200-plus a pop, plus a healthy donation as always from the Carter Chapman Shreve Family Foundation, you can expect to see plenty of cash go to all the top CSW finishers in both divisions in Williamsburg.

The logistics are coming together

We know that traveling for a weeklong Scrabble tournament can be a daunting proposition for anyone - so we're working to smooth out every logistical detail that we can to make life easier for you all, the players. Case in point: If you saw the "Getting to Word Cup is Easy" email that our team sent out last month, you know we're going to extra mile to make travel simpler.

Are you flying into Richmond and commuting to Williamsburg? If so, you can send us your flight times, and we'll take care of the rest to get you a shuttle to the tournament. That's just one example. All in all, we're doing whatever we can to make your Word Cup experience a good one.

The deadlines are approaching!

Are you reading all of this and getting excited to sign up for Word Cup? First of all: Good! We'd love to have you. Second of all: If you do want to register, it's best to act soon, because time is running out.

We're only a couple of weeks out from the June 30 deadline to book a hotel room in our discounted Word Cup room block. Then, not long after that, the deadline to sign up for the tournament itself is July 26.

So, if you're still on the fence - hop off! Take the plunge now and sign up for Word Cup 2026. You will most definitely not regret it.
